YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Youngstown Rayen Early College High School received $20,000 for STEAM initiatives.

Youngstown City School District the school had been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Howmet Aerospace Corporation’s Foundation to support the expansion of YREC’s STEAM programs for the 2022-2023 school year.

The Howmet Aerospace Foundation grant will allow YREC to purchase equipment and supplies for science classes and the school’s Makers Space, a designated area for YREC scholars and teachers to create and design projects. The funds will be used for items such as a CNC mill, laser, 3-D printers, hand power tools, a t-shirt press, microscopes, and laboratory glassware.

The Howmet Aerospace Foundation previously awarded several grants to YREC in STEAM-related areas. YREC science teacher Mark Robinson says the impact on scholars these funds have will benefit them now and into the future.

“The Maker’s Space, for example, is a communal place for collaboration and creativity. Students learn about teamwork, improve their communication skills, and have state-of-the-art access to equipment,” Robinson said. “YREC is beyond thankful for The Howmet Aerospace Foundation’s support and the doors they will help open for our scholars.”

During this upcoming school year, tours will be available for current and prospective scholars and YCSD staff. YREC will also hold training classes for scholars and staff to learn how to use the new equipment safely.

In the last two years, YRAC has been granted awards from Howmet Aerospace Foundation, including the Maker Space Youngstown Rayen Early College High School for $30,000, the STEAM grant for Science Department and the Maker Space for $30,000 and the STEAM initiative for Science, Math, and Engineering Classes $20,000.
