SALEM — The Sustainable Opportunity Development Center’s first class of Work Advance Students have graduated from the program.

The two-month program began with five students from across Mahoning and Columbiana counties, and at the time of the graduation ceremony July 12, had two graduates, Isaac Smith from Lake Park Tool and Machine in Liberty, and Jacqueline Anderson from Ventra Manufacturing in Salem.

The ceremony featured remarks from the Executive Director of the SOD Center Julie Needs, Instructor of the General Industry Michael Bane, Soft Skills and Career Readiness instructor Joanna Forbes, and Career Coach Wasilwa Mwonyonyi. The graduates’ awards and certificates were presented by the SOD Center’s Training Coordinator Eva Slagle.

The Work Advance Program was started at the SOD Center in 2018, with the program being expanded in 2020 with the Industrial Maintenance Readiness Program. The program was bolstered further by the expansion of the SOD Center’s computer lab in 2021, which has allowed the program to exist in its current form.

The program provides students with training in CNC, PLC, electronics, math, team building, interviewing skills, conflict resolution, professionalism, amongst others. Students who successfully complete the programs receive an Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10 certificate, a Mahoning County Career and Technical Center 168 hours Certified Production Certificate, and a $1,000 incentive check.

The Work Advance Program is one of many initiatives of the SOD Center to promote economic growth in Salem and increase the quality of life for Salem residents. The next Work Advance class will start in the beginning of August, and the SOD Center is currently seeking applicants.
